The 1st movement of the Piano Sonata KV 332, already composed quite orchestrally in the original, in a version for youth orchestra. The key was changed from F major to G major for easier performance.

Perhaps the best known piece from Puccini's "Trittico" in a version for soprano or choir and small youth orchestra in the key of F major. The instrumentation is based on the original, but adds new aspects and facilitations in places.

Well known and energetic is the opening dance. The virtuous sections of the original are facilitated, the key is retained.

An interesting composition by the Danish master. The 6 little piano pieces - here in an orchestral version - range from tender and contemplative to dance-like grazioso and rhythmically accentuated fortissimo. The keys have been made easier in some cases, and the resulting sound is richly differentiated. The rather simple opus for piano became an effective piece for your Christmas concert.

A cheerful, light piece with a rather gloomy middle section that reaches its climax in a loud fortissimo. Some facilitations are present.

This well-known composition is taken from the "Messe à trois voix" of 1860, with the "Panis angelicus" replacing the "O salutaris hostia" in 1872. In the original, it is in A major and is set for high voice, cello, harp and organ. The surely best known dance of this sequence, with some facilities. Retained were the distinctive character and the usual key Gmin.

This well known dance has the original key Dbmaj and ist mostly played in Dmaj. Here a version in Cmaj, which is a bit more favorable from a play technical point of view.

The original key Amaj was transposed to Fmaj. Some facilitaties of notation were added, whereby the rhythmical and distinctive dance character survived.

A version of the well-known title for youth orchestra and soprano (solo or choral). Gounod's lyrical melody with dramatic development - congenially set over Bach's 1st Prelude from the Well-Tempered Clavier Volume 1 - is presented in various instrumental combinations. The 16th-figure from Bach's work appears in the strings, the woodwinds and the piano.

The chosen key is similar to the soprano voice in its range, it is not too heavy for a well-trained student voice or choir.

All in all it is a beautiful piece for a festive occasion and is also suitable for a Christmas concert.

Not as well known as No. 1, 5 or 6, but no less lively and colorful. The original key (F sharp minor) has been moved to G minor, making it easier to execute. It is also more favorable for execution by strings.

Waltzes well playable in changing temper, sensible facilitated keys and colourful instrumentation. The only orchestral composed pieces were chosen from the 16 originals (four-handed piano).

The splendidly festive processional music in striding 3/4 time is taken from the opera "Mlada" (ca. 1890), whereby the original uses a multi-voiced choir in the middle and the final section. In this purely instrumental version for youth orchestra, Rimsky-Korsakov's opulent instrumentation is reduced to a normal instrumentation for symphony orchestra. The key of Eb maj has been retained, as it is quite convenient. A few simplifications and voice corrections have been made. Most important is the use of 3 trumpets (good players), which emphasize the brilliance of the piece, and good brass overall.

Dvorak opens the first collection of his Slavonic dances opus 46 with a Furiant (fast dance in three-four time with inserted hemiolas). The arrangement for string orchestra is based on the original, but brings some relief through a new key (B flat major instead of C major), slightly changed setting.

The 2nd dance from op. 72 is a Starodávny (slow dance in 3/4 time, "in the old style"). The original E minor was changed to G minor, simplifications in instrumentation and setting facilitate the arrangement.

After the great success of the Slavonic Dances op. 46 from 1878, Dvorak composed a new series in 1886. Here from it the last piece, a Sousedská (medium-fast Bohemian folk dance in 3/4 time). The present arrangement for string orchestra uses a new key (G instead of A flat).

For the fifth dance from op.72 Dvorak chooses a "Spacirka". The first part is solemnly walking, followed by a cheerful jumping dance. Both groups can be heard twice in a row. In this arrangement the keys were simplified (Bb minor to B minor, F sharp minor to G minor) and some changes were made to the setting . This makes this version much easier to play than the original.

This movement is one of the most famous classical melodies, as it is often used in film, television and advertising. Here is a version for youth orchestra, which retains the basic elements of the original, but works with simplifications (new keys, changed instrumentation).

Peer Gynt mourns the death of his beloved mother Åse. The original string piece in a version for mixed youth orchestra. Effective through sound-changing passages, the increase towards the middle and the final ebbing of the movement.

The well-known dance piece in mazurka style in an instrumentation for youth orchestra. The original string instrumentation was supplemented by winds and timpani, the key was changed to G minor. The repetition parts were orchestrated in changing instrumentation, resulting in a greater variety of colours.

Structure and layout correspond to the original (dynamics from pp to fff, large tempo increases towards the end). Some details are simplified (pitch in the vl., new key). All in all still a grandiose piece with a suggestive effect.

Mendelssohn wrote this music in 1836 for the funeral of his friend, composer colleague and contemporary Norbert Burgmüller, who had died in a tragic accident.
It is in A-B-A form, the martial main movement in the tutti is interrupted by a lyrical subsidiary movement with solo woodwinds and repeated at the end.
Here is a version for youth orchestra, the original was composed for harmony music to suit the occasion. The two high trombones were replaced by two alto saxophones and are also available as horn 3 & 4.

The well-known excerpt from Wagner's opera in a version for youth orchestra and two-part choir (ad. lib.). The choice of a new key (G major instead of B major) made the piece much easier or even playable for a youth orchestra. Even small changes in instrumentation contribute to this. The glorious, magnificent effect is preserved. The three solo fanfares were integrated as trumpets into the orchestration.

'Aquarellen' (= watercolours) by Niels Wilhelm Gade (composed 1850) are ten romantic, atmospheric pieces for piano of quite different character. In the present version for small youth orchestra the individual characteristics are clearly emphasized and set apart from each other. The original keys are partly changed, playing techniques are adapted to special techniques of the orchestra.
An absolutely new arrangement, which helps this beautiful opus to its deserved fame.
