The last fourteen songs were probably composed in 1827/28. They were compiled and published posthumously under the title "Schwanengesang" by the Viennese publisher Tobias Haslinger. It is an unusual compilation of songs whose texts could not be more different in style and literary rank

Ludwig Rellstab's poems thematize the loss of love and longing for love of the lyrical ego in a romantic, rapturous manner. Partly friendly, partly melancholy, they seem like rereadings of Schubert's cycles based on poems by Wilhelm Müller. Often composed in a major key, with inherent movement and harmonic euphony. This also applies to "Die Taubenpost" after a text by Seidl. One exception is the song "In der Ferne", dominated by a certain agonizing static, which relaxes in the last verse. The same applies to "Aufenthalt" with its restlessness and dramatic bass lines characterized by continuous triolics

Vivaldis Double Concerto" for 2 violins from the collection "L'estro armonico" (op.3,8, A minor) in a version for 2 violas and string orchestra. The work was transposed a fifth down to D minor, so that the solo parts correspond exactly to the violin model in terms of the fingering. Also playable in combination (Vla1 & Vc2). The orchestral part has been adapted accordingly. An effective piece for advanced viola players!

The present arrangement for string orchestra is based on small character pieces for four-hand piano, composed in 1809 and 1819 respectively. A-B-A forms are present in each case, the keys are always in the ratio of variants. The parts are partly led divisi, the viola is supported by a 3rd violin.

The first piece "all' ongharese" (In Hungarian style) contains particular rhythmic elements as they were common in some compositions of the early 19th century (Weber: Andante & Rondo ongharese, Berlioz: Hungarian March).

Whether both composers have met each other is questionable. When Beethoven came to Vienna in 1790 to introduce himself to Mozart as a new student, Mozart was probably travelling (Potsdam). When Beethoven finally moved to Vienna in 1792, Mozart had already died.
The present arrangements of single movements from Mozart's and Beethoven's piano sonatas were composed during my studies in Freiburg in 1970 (Beethoven Year). They were pure instrumentation studies and were never performed. Recently I had the idea of reworking these pieces and combining them. This is a version for string orchestra.
The movements are similar in character and structure to a four-movement symphony, but the keys have been chosen and adapted to each other.
